On Sunday, I started doing this thing we having been calling Soul Music Sundays. Yesterday it was all about Erykah Badu. The vibes were legit, the beats were dope and we went to work on fun Modo Flow class. It’s like I always say, if you’re gonna do soul work, then we best kick with soul music.
"Some changes look negative on the surface, but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge."
- Eckhart Tolle -
ON THE MAT
That's what we are doing here. We get to have a say and have a direct part in the change we create. This is yoga; that's what we are doing here, changing our perspective, going further than the surface. That's what we're dong here, creating space for new growth to emerge!!
As we moved through the class, we returned to this intention of 'space for new growth'. When we hit that final Savasana the room felt so open and free, it was beautiful.
OFF THE MAT
We have a love-hate relationship with change. At work, when they implement a new policy we hate change. When we are sick, we want to be better right away; things can't change fast enough.
We must go further than the surface.
One way to do this is meditation. I remember sitting one day and anger was rising in me. I could feel it twisting in my stomach. Over and over again I returned to the breath. I sat still. Again and again, I returned to breath.
"If you're still enough,
it will let go of you."
I remember what my Dharma teacher Poep Sa said on retreat once, "If you're still enough, it will let go of you." Easier said than done. Doesn't mean we shouldn't do it.
I sat there for 30 minutes, feeling the anger. I did not want the anger to be the lead in my decision making; it would only make things worse. So I returned to breath over and over again. I sat still, and slowly I went beyond the surface. The anger fell away. I emerged with new space to make decisions from a more peaceful place.
You have a say in how your respond to change. And you have a say in cultivating change. Empower yourself, start with a nice inhale and exhale, the go further.
