Path To Peace

July 1, 2015 Phil Doucette

I had a fun week teaching this last week.  On the weekend we had two Modo Flow classes where we gave away tickets to a cool event here in Minneapolis called The Basilica Block Party.  I made playlists with artists who are coming to this years event.  Oh man did the students work hard for those tickets.

My fave intention from the week came from a Modo Yoga 60 minute class where we explored a path to peace. It was inspired by a from one of my faves, Pema Chodron.  Haha, if you’ve checked older blogs you know I love working with inspiration from this great teacher.  The quote is:

“I’m here to tell you that the path to peace is right there, when you want to get away.”

ON THE MAT

I was in a class years ago and the teacher said, “the yoga begins when you want to come out of the pose.” This stuck with me.  This quote really is saying the same thing.  When we are holding a pose for what seems like a long time we can talk ourselves out of how strong we really are.

For example, powerful pose. When we sit in that imaginary chair, we can feel it in the legs, and with our arms reaching out we can feel it in our shoulders.  The longer we stay in it, the easier it becomes to either tense up in the jaw & body or negotiate our way out it…when you want to get away… that is the path to peace.

You can face 'that moment' in every posture and you can be right there, you can find a breath that says, “i won’t avoid or walk away from this.”  Here, we don’t just stay on the path of peace, but we cultivate strength, we nurture resolve.  This really helps us off the mat.

OFF THE MAT

Tough situations at work, rough moments at home with a loved ones or our children, or simply being in terrible traffic.  We face these same moments. Moments where we want to get away, avoid, push away, or even lash out. But the path to peace is right there, it’s in that split second where you chose breath instead of adding more fuel to the fire in an argument.  It’s right there in that terrible traffic when you take a breath and choose to roll the windows down and crank the tunes. It's right there when you choose to make the most of your life.  The path to peace is always right there, when you want to get away.

fave playlist from this week was a sick Soul & Funk vibes
