No joke, I love Los Angeles. So eclectic, diverse & full of vegan restaurants. Out here teaching for a week and dropping sick beats over at Modo Yoga LA. These yogi's love to work hard and I ain't afraid to challenge them.
I landed last Friday, and the first person I saw was my friend Jasmine. My daughter thinks she's Princess Jasmine which makes me the coolest dad in the world. We hug and sit down, I already see tears in her eyes, "Okay, I'm gonna drop a bomb on you. I've had a big life change. I have a tumour in my brain, and I'm having surgery on Wednesday."
As she broke it down for me, we cried, but her spirit is so strong. When we departed she said to me, "Phil, I know you, I don't want you to be anxious about this. It's not my time yet. My daughter is only two. IT'S NOT MY TIME YET. I will get through this and be stronger then ever." I left feeling confident and strong because her spirit made sure of it.
This exchange inspired our intention for class last Saturday.
We have the ability to move forward. We can step into our life with confidence and strength. It does not mean it "will work out how we want", but we can MOVE FORWARD. We never have to feel stuck.
ON THE MAT
One of the special benefits of yoga is it can be a great way to remind ourselves that we never have to stay stuck. We have the ability to move forward.
In down dog, "look forward, see the hands, then step forward with confidence. Inhale lengthen the heart forward. Exhale drop away expectations. Inhale sweep up with possibility. Exhale hands to heart center. Let's stay here. Soften your gaze, lift your chest a little into the thumbs and find your heart beat. Feel it. Touch your aliveness. Meditation moment.
From this intention, we took a few extra meditation moments. By returning to this focus of "our ability to move forward" we created space to be empowered by our practice.
OFF THE MAT
It's easy to get stuck in our thoughts. It's easy to get stuck in the past. It's easy to get stuck in old habits. It's easy to feel stuck in circumstance.
With a deliberate breath, we can get unstuck. Off the mat we can sit on a cushion and meditate. Be with the breath, notice our thoughts. Here's the thing, 'stuck' is really just a feeling. You can feel stuck. But you are never really stuck. If you're still enough, it will let go of you.
So we can move forward and empower our life by sitting still. Give it a try!
