Thich Nhat Hanh is badass man. This guy is an inspiring model for the capacity we each have to make every step peace. Peace in every step.
We are here to awaken from our illusion of separateness .

ON THE MAT
Simple & powerful. This quote today is a great way to explore the interdependence of every posture. In yoga practice we sometimes think we are doing one thing, often our teachers will give a specific benefit or cue to bring focus to this 'one thing' or 'one posture'. That benefit or cue is not separate; it's connected to other parts of the body. For example, when we do a low lunge and stretch our hip flexor we help create space for stability in the core & low back.
Step back from looking at a single posture and we can see that entire MODO sequence teaches us that nothing is separate. Each posture is a dynamic lead to the next posture. One of our first poses is half moon where we open up the muscles along the ribs and prepare the body for twists. The twists prepare the spine for back bends. The back bends prepare us for a forward fold. One leads to the next, working and supporting the WHOLE body.
As we moved through the class, we kept exploring this beautiful truth. When we forward fold down, to deepen the work in our hammies we also lift up in our core. We also lift the front of our legs. Up & down are not separate. When we are in dancers & kicking back, we also reach forward. In the middle is a balance point. Forward & back is not separate.
OFF THE MAT
In our life, one way we separate things is by labelling them. We say "good" experience or that was"bad" experience. We separate male & female. And through history we have separated humans into classes, races & religion. With some trying to convince us that one is better than the other.
Many have convinced themselves they are separate from animals, and we use them for food, sport and entertainment. It's created a lot of violence and harm.
Some people are even convinced that we are separate from nature and that how we treat the earth is not a big deal. Some will tell you that global warming doesn't exist. WTF!?
What Tháy is saying with this quote is that all of it is an illusion. Nothing is separate, it's all woven, and every choice we make & don't make has an impact.
When we awaken to know this 'illusion of separateness ' with each breath we take, we also awaken compassion, and we create the capacity to step into diversity and interdependence. We can hold space and experience life without adding any labels or storylines.
