In 2003 Phil went to visit his cousin at Sick Kids Hospital [toronto]. He was battaling Leukimia [cancer of the blood cells]. He went to visit one boy; it was personal. When he got to the hospital he was overwhelmed at how many children were 'fighting for their lives.'
Using Philly D's High 5 4 Dreams program Nelson High School in Burlington, Ontario, Canada raised $13 000, and with their generous donation they made dreams a reality for two very special children.
I went to Nelson High School recently to meet Manuel & Karly who just months previous had their dreams fulfilled by Sunshine Dreams For Kids. The school hosted an amazing assembly so Manuel & Karly could say thank you.
Karly, 7, is a student at the private Froebel Education Centre in Mississauga. She has Apert's Syndrome, a condition that leads to the premature fusing of cranial bones. It affects one in 750,000 children and requires several rounds of surgery. Karly's dream was realized in February when she took a three-night Disney cruise ship tour of the Bahamas.
Manuel, 6, has neurofibromatosis, which has resulted in scoliosis, or curvature of the spine. He wears a back brace and has had surgery already and must undergo corrective surgery each year Manuel until he is 10. The Grade 1 St. Mark student went to Disney World with his mother, Marcela Uribe, in late February. Since Uribe is a single parent the Sunshine group also arranged for her sister, Teresa, whom she hadn't seen in five years, to be flown in from their native Colombia to meet each other in Orlando, Fla.
Marcela told the students, "It was a dream come true for both us. Thank so much." Before she could finish speaking the outgoing Manuel grabbed the mic to say, "My favourite part of Disney World was... everything." The crowd roared with laughter. The two children brought so much wonderful energy into the school.
Karly's mother read a poem that the two of them put together the night before. It was a beautiful thank you that paid tribute to the hard work of Nelson's staff and students.
